Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened Softened, not melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk Can be substituted with regular milk mixed with vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest Zest is the best!
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
For the Citrus Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest Can never have too much zest!

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Mixing Ingredients
  1. Stir in the buttermilk, fresh orange juice, and zest.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and poppy seeds. Gradually add this dry mixture into the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  2. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Glazing
  1. While your cake cools, whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice, and zest for the glaze. Once the cake is cool, drizzle the glaze all over the top.

Notes

Feel free to adjust the orange zest to your taste! Allow the cake to cool completely before glazing. Poppy seeds not only add flavor but also texture.
