Ingredients

For the cake
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk
For the milks
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup whole milk
For the topping
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • A sprinkle of cinnamon or chocolate shavings for a fancy finish!

Method

Bake the Cake
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder.
  3. In another bowl, cream the sugar and butter until light and fluffy.
  4. Add in the eggs and vanilla, and beat until well combined.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients and milk until just combined.
  6. Pour this batter into a greased 9x9-inch baking dish and bake for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let it cool completely.
Prepare the Milks
  1. In a bowl, whisk together the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and whole milk.
Soaking the Cake
  1. Once the cake has cooled, poke holes all over the top with a fork.
  2. Pour the milk mixture over the cake, ensuring it's evenly soaked.
  3. Use any leftover milk mixture for drizzling later.
Make the Whipped Topping
  1. In a mixing bowl, beat the heavy whipping cream, sugar, and vanilla until soft peaks form.
Assemble Your Dessert in a Glass
  1. Crumble a piece of the soaked cake into the bottom of your serving glass.
  2. Layer on some whipped cream, and repeat with another layer of cake and cream until you reach the top.
  3. Finish with a sprinkle of cinnamon or shaved chocolate.

Notes

Don’t skip the cooling step; if the cake is warm, the milk won't soak in beautifully. Use high-quality vanilla extract for extra flavor. You can add fresh fruit like strawberries or bananas between layers for added freshness.
