Method
Preparation
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil and blanch cabbage leaves for 2-3 minutes until tender. Remove and cool.
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, egg, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix until well blended.
Forming and Assembling
- Take a cabbage leaf, place a spoonful of filling at the base, tuck in the sides, and roll tightly. Repeat with remaining fillings.
- Mix tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes in a bowl. Spread some sauce at the bottom of a baking dish.
- Place cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish, pour remaining sauce over them.
Baking
- Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
Notes
Cabbage leaves can tear; imperfect rolls are still delicious! Use pre-packaged coleslaw for a quick alternative. Leftover sauce is great for pasta or bread dipping.
