  • 2.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1.5 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon black food coloring
For the Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Decoration
  • Black sprinkles or edible eyes For decoration, to enhance the spooky effect.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, combine the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, vanilla, vinegar, and black food coloring. Mix until well blended.
  4. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
Baking
  1. Divide the batter evenly among greased cake pans.
  2. Bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  3. Once done, allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 15 minutes before transferring them to wire racks.
Frosting and Assembly
  1. In a mixing bowl, beat together the butter and cream cheese until creamy.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Level your cooling cakes if needed, and place one layer on a serving platter. Spread frosting on top, add the second layer, and cover the entire cake with frosting.
Decoration
  1. Decorate with black sprinkles or edible eyes for a spooky effect.

Notes

Use a piping bag for a more dramatic frosting look. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
