Ingredients
  

For the Cake
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk Can be substituted with homemade version using milk and vinegar.
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup optional mix-ins (mini chocolate chips, chopped fruits, or nuts) Customize with your favorite flavors.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
Mixing
  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the buttermilk and vanilla extract.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this mix into the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  4. Stir in your favorite mix-ins.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter into your prepared baking pan and smooth out the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Cooling & Serving
  1. Remove the cake and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Frost or dust with powdered sugar as desired.

Notes

You can substitute butter for oil, but note that butter adds flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days, or freeze tightly wrapped for later use.
