Ingredients
  

For the Cake
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk Easily made by adding 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to 1 cup of milk.
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
For the Twist (Frosting and Extra Flavor)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 0.5 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • to taste sprinkles, chopped nuts, or fruit for topping Optional

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together and set aside.
  3. In another large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. One by one, add the eggs to the butter-sugar mixture, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Gradually add in the buttermilk and vanilla extract.
  6. Slowly mix in the dry ingredients until just combined, being careful not to over-mix.
  7. Pour the batter into a greased sheet pan (about 9x13 inches).
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Making the Twist
  1. While the cake is baking, whip up the frosting by combining powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl. Mix until smooth, adjusting consistency with more milk or sugar as needed.
Frosting and Serving
  1. Once the cake is completely cool, spread the frosting generously on top.
  2. Decorate with optional sprinkles, nuts, or fruit.

Notes

Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting to avoid a melty mess. You can customize the cake with chocolate chips or different flavored extracts.
