Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steak
  • 1 pound ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork for extra flavor)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
For the Mushroom Gravy
  • 2 cups mushrooms, sliced (any variety you prefer!)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 burger-shaped patties that are about an inch thick. Set aside.
Cooking the Patties
  1. In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat.
  2. Add patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate to rest.
Making the Mushroom Gravy
  1. In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium and add the butter.
  2. Toss in the sliced mushrooms and sauté until golden and fragrant (about 5-7 minutes).
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and mix well.
  4. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Dijon mustard, stirring until the gravy is smooth and bubbling (3-4 minutes).
  5. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.
Combining and Serving
  1. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over the top.
  2. Let them simmer for about 2 minutes.
Plating
  1. Serve your Salisbury Steak with creamy mashed potatoes or buttery noodles, and drizzle extra gravy on top.

Notes

If mushrooms stick, add more oil. Leftover patties make perfect sandwiches. Consider mixing in cheese or herbs in the beef mixture for added flavor.
