Ingredients
  

For the patties and onions
  • 1 pound ground beef (or your favorite protein–turkey or veggie)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 1 medium onion, sliced sweeter caramelized goodness
  • 2 tablespoons butter the secret ingredient for that final crisp
For the sandwich assembly
  • 4 slices rye bread because what’s a patty melt without the right bread?
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese feel free to mix it up with cheddar for a flavor twist

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Start by seasoning your ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Once seasoned, shape it into two patties.
Cooking the Onions
  1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt one tablespoon of butter. Toss in the sliced onion and let it cook until caramelized, stirring occasionally (about 10-15 minutes).
Cooking the Patties
  1. Move the onions to the side of the pan and add the beef patties into the skillet. Cook them to your desired doneness (about 4-5 minutes per side for medium). Add cheese slices on top of the patties towards the end so it melts beautifully.
Assembling the Sandwich
  1. Place a slice of bread on a plate, top it with a patty, followed by caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top it off with a second slice of bread.
Grilling
  1. Wipe out the pan, add the remaining tablespoon of butter, and grill your sandwich over medium heat until crispy and golden brown on both sides (about 3-4 minutes per side). Press down gently with a spatula for extra melty goodness.
Serving
  1. Slice the sandwiches in half and serve with your favorite sides—think crispy fries or a fresh side salad.

Notes

A dollop of secret sauce (ketchup and mayo mixed together) adds a fantastic kick! If your first patty isn’t perfect, laugh it off and enjoy! Consider adding jalapeños or spicy mustard for extra flavor.
