Method
Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk to combine.
- Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes, then stir in the boiling water.
- Pour the batter evenly into your prepared pans.
Baking
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely on a wire rack.
Frosting
- In a large bowl, cream the softened butter until fluffy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Mix in the vanilla and enough milk to reach your preferred frosting consistency.
Assembly
- Place one layer of cake on a plate, spread a generous amount of frosting on top, then add the second layer.
- Frost the top and sides of the cake and decorate as desired.
Finishing Touches
- Add chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or other decorations before serving.
Notes
Let cakes cool completely before frosting to prevent slipping and ensure smooth application. Consider adding a splash of espresso to enhance the chocolate flavor.
