Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steak
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko) For a lighter texture
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 ea egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • to taste Salt and pepper For seasoning
For the Mushroom Gravy
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced (button or cremini)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons of water For thickening
  • to taste Salt and pepper For seasoning

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, beaten egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well blended but do not overmix.
  2. Form the mixture into four equal patties, about 3/4 inch thick.
Cooking
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add a splash of olive oil. Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and sliced mushrooms. Sauté for about 5 minutes until softened and brown.
  3. Pour in the beef broth and soy sauce. Let simmer, then stir in the cornstarch mixture and simmer for another 2-3 minutes until gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Return the patties to the skillet to reheat in the gravy for a few moments.
Serving
  1. Serve your Homemade Salisbury Steak hot over creamy mashed potatoes or alongside steamed vegetables.

Notes

For best flavor, don’t skimp on seasoning. To achieve thicker gravy, add more cornstarch mixed with water as needed. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
