Method
Preparation
- Whisk together the flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt in a large bowl.
- Mix in the warm buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until a soft dough forms.
Kneading
- Transfer your dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
- If it’s sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as you go.
Rising
- Place kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size—about 1 hour.
Shaping
- Punch the dough down gently and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thick.
- Use a round cutter or a glass to cut your doughnuts and a smaller cutter for the holes.
Frying
- Heat about 2 inches of oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep pot.
- Drop the doughnuts in a few at a time, frying for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate.
Glazing
- Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl for the glaze.
- Dunk each warm doughnut into the glaze, swirling until well-coated.
- Set aside on wire racks to let the glaze set.
Serving
- Serve the Homemade Krispy Kremes fresh and warm.
Notes
Add a sprinkle of cinnamon for extra flavor or switch up the glaze with chocolate. Monitor oil temperature to avoid soggy or crispy doughnuts. Making doughnuts can be a fun family activity.
