Ingredients

Doughnuts
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet instant yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk, warmed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Oil, for frying (canola or vegetable oil works well)
Glaze
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

Preparation
  1. Whisk together the flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Mix in the warm buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until a soft dough forms.
Kneading
  1. Transfer your dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  2. If it’s sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as you go.
Rising
  1. Place kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size—about 1 hour.
Shaping
  1. Punch the dough down gently and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thick.
  2. Use a round cutter or a glass to cut your doughnuts and a smaller cutter for the holes.
Frying
  1. Heat about 2 inches of oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep pot.
  2. Drop the doughnuts in a few at a time, frying for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  3. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate.
Glazing
  1. Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl for the glaze.
  2. Dunk each warm doughnut into the glaze, swirling until well-coated.
  3. Set aside on wire racks to let the glaze set.
Serving
  1. Serve the Homemade Krispy Kremes fresh and warm.

Notes

Add a sprinkle of cinnamon for extra flavor or switch up the glaze with chocolate. Monitor oil temperature to avoid soggy or crispy doughnuts. Making doughnuts can be a fun family activity.
