Ingredients
  

Base Layer
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Sifted for better texture
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened Allow to sit at room temperature
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg At room temperature
Caramel Layer
  • 1 cup caramel sauce Store-bought or homemade
  • 1 cup chopped pecans Toasted for extra flavor
Topping
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, softened butter, salt, and egg until combined into a smooth dough.
  3. Press two-thirds of the dough into the bottom of a greased 9x9 inch baking pan.
  4. Bake the base layer in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes until firm.
Caramel Layer
  1. Prepare the caramel sauce while the base is baking, combining sugar, butter, and cream over low heat until smooth.
  2. Mix in the chopped pecans, then pour this mixture over the baked base.
  3. Crumble the remaining dough over the caramel layer.
Final Bake
  1. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the top and return to the oven for another 18 to 20 minutes.
  2. Once cool, slice into squares.

Notes

If your caramel becomes too thick, reheat gently to achieve the right consistency. Substitute pecans with walnuts or macadamia nuts if desired.
