Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, softened butter, salt, and egg until combined into a smooth dough.
- Press two-thirds of the dough into the bottom of a greased 9x9 inch baking pan.
- Bake the base layer in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes until firm.
Caramel Layer
- Prepare the caramel sauce while the base is baking, combining sugar, butter, and cream over low heat until smooth.
- Mix in the chopped pecans, then pour this mixture over the baked base.
- Crumble the remaining dough over the caramel layer.
Final Bake
- Sprinkle chocolate chips over the top and return to the oven for another 18 to 20 minutes.
- Once cool, slice into squares.
Notes
If your caramel becomes too thick, reheat gently to achieve the right consistency. Substitute pecans with walnuts or macadamia nuts if desired.
