Preparation
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, milk, egg, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form the mixture into 4 oval patties.
Cooking
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a drizzle of oil. Once hot, add the hamburger steaks and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through.
- Remove the steak patties and cover them with foil to keep warm. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and sauté until golden.
- Add a bit of salt to the onions, then pour in the beef broth and soy sauce, scraping up any browned bits. If desired, mix cornstarch with water and stir into the gravy to thicken.
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, allowing them to soak in the onion gravy for a minute before plating.
Notes
Prep ahead and store in the fridge for up to two days. For a sweeter gravy, caramelize the onions longer. A splash of Worcestershire sauce can enhance the gravy flavor.
