Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Mix for about 2 minutes using an electric mixer or by hand.
- Fold in the sour cream until just combined to get a smooth batter.
- Gently stir in the chocolate chips.
- Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans and divide the batter evenly between them.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- Frost with your favorite chocolate frosting or sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days, or in the fridge for a week. If layers are stubborn, run a knife along the pan edges before flipping out.
