Ingredients

For the Meatloaf
  • 2 pounds ground beef Use your preferred fat content
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Plain or seasoned, based on preference
  • 2 large eggs Bind the mixture
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley For flavor and garnish
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Adds umami flavor
  • 1 medium onion, diced Legendary for the flavor base
  • 2 tablespoons butter For sautéing onions
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese Divided for mixing and topping
  • Salt and pepper To taste

Method

Preparation
  1. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté until soft and lightly caramelized, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, half of the Gruyère cheese, parsley, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, and the caramelized onions. Season with salt and pepper, then mix thoroughly using your hands.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a loaf pan, shaping it into a compact loaf.
Cooking
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the meatloaf for approximately 60 minutes.
  2. With about 10 minutes left, sprinkle the remaining Gruyère cheese on top to form a cheesy crust.
Serving
  1. Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes after removing from the oven. Slice and serve with sides like mashed potatoes or a salad.

Notes

If the mixture feels too dry, add a splash of milk. Use a meat thermometer to check for an internal temperature of 160°F (70°C). You can also add mushrooms or a splash of red wine for variations.
