Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well incorporated.
- Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla to the dry mixture. Mix until just combined.
- Pour in boiling water and mix (the batter will be liquidy).
Baking
- Pour the batter evenly into two greased 9-inch round cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Ganache Preparation
- While the cakes cool, heat heavy cream in a small pot until it just begins to simmer.
- Remove from heat and add the chocolate chips. Stir until melted and smooth.
Assembly
- Place one cake layer on a serving platter. Spread ganache on top.
- Add the second layer and cover the entire cake with remaining ganache.
Decoration
- Decorate with chocolate shavings, whipped cream, and assorted candies.
Serving
- Slice and serve.
Notes
If your batter is slightly lumpy, it's okay! This cake can be made ahead and stored in the fridge, just bring to room temperature before serving.
