Activation
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
Mixing
- Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture, and optionally olive oil. Mix until it forms a shaggy dough.
Kneading
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
First Rise
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
Shaping
- Once risen, punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased bread pan or on a baking sheet.
Second Rise
- Cover the loaf and let it rise for another 30 minutes while preheating the oven to 375°F.
Baking
- Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Cooling and Slicing
- Cool slightly before slicing.
Notes
Adjust flour based on humidity. Store leftovers in an airtight container; great toasted!
