Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Adjust depending on humidity.
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2¼ teaspoons)
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Optional but adds flavor.

Method
 

Activation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
Mixing
  1. Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture, and optionally olive oil. Mix until it forms a shaggy dough.
Kneading
  1. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
First Rise
  1. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
Shaping
  1. Once risen, punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased bread pan or on a baking sheet.
Second Rise
  1. Cover the loaf and let it rise for another 30 minutes while preheating the oven to 375°F.
Baking
  1. Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Cooling and Slicing
  1. Cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

Adjust flour based on humidity. Store leftovers in an airtight container; great toasted!
