Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined—don’t overdo it, or your steaks might end up tougher than you want!
Cooking the Steaks
- Form the mixture into about four equal-shaped patties. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat and add a splash of oil. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Making the Gravy
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Sprinkle in the flour, whisking constantly for about 1-2 minutes until it turns golden brown.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes until it thickens up nicely.
Finishing Touch
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, allowing them to bask in that rich, flavorful gravy for a couple of minutes. Serve them hot with a side of mashed potatoes or steamed veggies.
Notes
If your gravy looks lumpy, whisk it vigorously until smooth. You can toss in some sautéed mushrooms or green bell peppers for extra flavor and nutrition.
