Preparation
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it’s foamy.
- Stir in softened butter and salt. Gradually add in 3 cups of flour, mixing until a dough forms. If it’s too sticky, add the last cup of flour gradually until you have a soft, manageable dough.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead for about 5 minutes, or until it’s smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 10-15 minutes.
- After the dough has doubled, punch it down, then gently roll it into 12 balls. Place them on a greased baking sheet.
- Cover the rolls for another 10 minutes while your oven preheats to 375°F.
- Bake the rolls in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until they’re golden brown. Brush them with melted butter right when they come out.
Notes
While kneading, sprinkle a bit of flour as needed; resist adding too much. You can mix in herbs, garlic powder, or cheese for added flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to two days, or freeze them.
