Description

A comforting one-dish casserole that combines the flavors of traditional Swedish meatballs with creamy noodles, perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean recommended)
  • ½ pound ground pork
  • ¾ cup plain breadcrumbs (panko works beautifully)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced (about ½ cup)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon allspice
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 oz egg noodles (medium width)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (low-sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the meatballs: Combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, diced onion, garlic, egg, milk, parsley, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Mix gently, form into 1-inch balls, and brown in a skillet.
  2. Cook the noodles: Boil salted water, cook egg noodles for 2 minutes less than package directions, then drain.
  3. Prepare the sauce: In the same skillet, melt butter, whisk in flour, then gradually add beef broth. Stir in heavy cream and simmer.
  4. Assemble the bake: Preheat oven to 375°F. Layer half the noodles, half the meatballs, and half the sauce. Repeat and sprinkle Swiss cheese on top.
  5. Bake for 20 minutes covered, then remove foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until bubbly and golden.

Notes

Use plant-based ground meat for a vegetarian version and choose gluten-free breadcrumbs and noodles for dietary restrictions.
