- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1½ cups hot water
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
- Whisk together flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until combined. Add milk, melted butter, and vanilla.
- Pour the batter into the prepared dish, spreading evenly, then sprinkle brown sugar and cocoa mixture on top without stirring.
- Carefully pour the hot water (or coffee) over the mixture, again without stirring.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes until the top is set but slightly soft in the center. Allow to cool for 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a healthier alternative, reduce sugar and substitute with whole wheat flour or applesauce.
