Description

A simple and delicious tuna tart with flaky shortcrust pastry, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 250g all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend)
  • 125g cold butter, cubed (or dairy-free butter alternative)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 34 tablespoons ice-cold water
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 cans (185g each) tuna in olive oil, drained (or smoked salmon/chickpeas for vegetarian option)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 200ml heavy cream (or coconut cream for dairy-free version)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 100g grated cheese (or nutritional yeast for dairy-free)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon capers, drained
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Shortcrust Pastry: In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Rub in the cold butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add the beaten egg and cold water gradually, mixing until the dough forms. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and roll out the chilled pastry to 1/8 inch thickness. Transfer to a 9-inch tart pan, prick with a fork, and blind bake for 15 minutes. Remove and bake for another 5 minutes.
  3. Sauté the onions in olive oil until translucent. Add garlic and cook for another minute. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, cream, tuna, sautéed onions and garlic, cheese, dill, capers, lemon zest, salt, and pepper.
  4. Pour the filling into the tart shell and smooth the top. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes until set and golden brown.
  5. Cool for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs.

Notes

For a lighter version, use Greek yogurt instead of heavy cream and whole wheat flour for the crust.
