Description

General Tso’s Chicken is a perfect recipe for busy nights. Quick, easy, and delicious, this dish combines crispy chicken with a sweet and tangy sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs (or breasts)
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Oil (for frying)
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust for spice level)
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep the chicken: Start by cutting the chicken into bite-sized pieces. In one bowl, combine the cornstarch, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, beat the egg. Coat the chicken in the cornstarch mix, then dip it in the egg, allowing any excess to drip off.
  2. Fry the chicken: In a large skillet, heat about 1/2 inch of oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully add the chicken in batches, frying until golden and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove and let drain on paper towels.
  3. Make the sauce: In a separate bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sugar, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes.
  4. Combine: In a clean skillet, add the sauce over medium heat until it starts to bubble, then add the fried chicken. Toss until the chicken is well coated in the sauce.
  5. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Serve over rice or with steamed veggies.

Notes

You can marinate the chicken in the sauce beforehand for deeper flavor, but it may not be as crispy. Try using tofu instead of chicken for a vegetarian option.
