Description
Enjoy crispy mini blooming onions with 75% less oil than the traditional recipe, perfect for a healthier appetizer.
Ingredients
Scale
- 5 small yellow onions (2–3 inches in diameter)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (substitute almond flour for keto-friendly version)
- 2 large eggs, beaten (or ¼ cup aquafaba for vegan option)
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (substitute crushed pork rinds for keto option)
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Olive oil spray (or avocado oil spray for higher heat tolerance)
Instructions
- Cut off the top ¼ inch of each onion and peel the outer skin. Make downward cuts around the onion without cutting through the root end. Flip the onion over and gently separate the petals.
- Set up three bowls: one with flour mixed with half the spices, one with beaten eggs, and one with panko breadcrumbs mixed with the remaining spices.
- Working with one mini onion at a time, dust with seasoned flour, dip into the egg mixture, and coat with the panko mixture.
- Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes.
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil, place the coated onions in the basket, and air fry for 10-12 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
Notes
For extra crispiness, double-dip by repeating the egg and panko steps. Keep prepared onions covered in the refrigerator if making ahead.
