Description

Transform the classic Southern breakfast into a convenient casserole format with flaky, buttery biscuits and savory sausage gravy.


Ingredients

  • 2 cans (16.3 oz each) refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
  • 1 pound breakfast sausage (regular or sage-flavored)
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Cut each biscuit into quarters and arrange half of them in the bottom of your prepared baking dish.
  3. Cook the sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat until no pink remains (approximately 5-7 minutes).
  4. Reduce heat to medium and add flour to the cooked sausage, stirring constantly for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Gradually whisk in the milk, followed by salt, black pepper, cayenne (if using), and garlic powder. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened.
  6. Pour half of the gravy mixture over the biscuit pieces in your baking dish. Layer the remaining biscuit quarters on top, then add the remaining gravy. Sprinkle with shredded cheese. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

Let the casserole stand for 5-10 minutes before serving for better flavor meld and to prevent burns.
